The permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Labor and Employment Ms. Daju Kachollom, mni has revealed that the ministry has created a budget line for Training and Development in the Medium-Term National Development Plan (MTNDP) 2021-2025.

She made this known at a one-day capacity building of professional Labor Officers at the Golden Dabis Hotel Keffi, Nassarawa State.

Daju said, “training and development programs like this provides a wide range of benefits; it improves staff performance, boosts employee’s confidence and productivity, reduces employee’s turnover and enhances the Ministry’s overall performance in delivering the ministerial mandate”.

The Permanent Secretary further stated that the capacity building workshop with the theme: Labor Inspection Services; Approaches and Procedures, is very strategic because the workplace which the participants you belong will continually interface with change.

The technological innovations vis-à-vis are some natural or environmental occurrences as seen in the recent COVID-19 pandemic have brought about emerging labor issues that are challenging to our efforts in the Labor administration system; these contexts demand that we continue to evaluate our mode of operations and equip ourselves to keep abreast with the vagaries in the world of work.

She encouraged that the professional labor officers playing the role of government umpire, are expected to carry out periodic  and labor inspection of work places, educate employer/employees and enforce the National Standards with a view to nipping in the bud any potential threat to industrial peace

“You are also required to enshrine decent work by unearthing unfair labor practices and other unwholesome practices such as child labor, forced labor modern slavery and employers human trafficking in workplaces” she added.

Earlier in a welcome address by the Director Inspectorate, Mr. Ajuwon Dauda said the training workshop is designed to build the capacity of professional Labor officers on understanding Approaches and procedures to Labor inspection services.

He added that Employers of labor are generally interested in maximizing their profits. Often times, they come out with cost cutting measures and other unfair labor practices that generally impede the wellbeing of workers. It is to this that governments play the role of umpire to moderate the activities of employers and employees in order to secure industrial peace and harmony.
